Philip Shaibu, the deputy governor of Edo State, faced impeachment during a plenary session in Benin City, the state capital.
The decision followed a report from a seven-member committee appointed by Justice Daniel Okungbowa to investigate allegations against Shaibu.
This move occurred as a Federal High Court in Abuja was scheduled to resume hearings on Shaibu’s lawsuit challenging the impeachment proceedings.
Last week, 21 out of 24 lawmakers initiated the impeachment process, citing accusations of perjury and divulging state secrets against Shaibu.
Despite a seven-day ultimatum for Shaibu to respond to the impeachment notice, he allegedly evaded service, prompting the Assembly to resort to substituted service via newspapers.
This process concluded with Shaibu’s impeachment, marking a climax in the political tension between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki.
The discord between Shaibu and Obaseki stemmed from Shaibu’s aspirations to contest the Peoples Democratic Party’s governorship primary, leading to accusations and counter-accusations between the two.
Despite Shaibu’s parallel declaration of victory in the primary, businessman Asue Ighodalo emerged as the party’s official flagbearer.
