Concerned by the rising cases of road crashes in the State, the Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution calling on the State Government to urgently checkmate the activities of motorcycles riders across the State with a view to ensuring strict compliance to road traffic laws and regulations towards curbing overloading and reckless driving to protect commuters and other road users.
The passage of the resolution followed a motion moved by the Sponsor and a member representing Abeokuta South I State Constituency, Yusuf Adejojo, seconded by his Ijebu Ode counterpart, Kemi Oduwole and supported by the Whole House through a voice vote at a plenary presided over by Speaker Olakunle Oluomo, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan.
Opening debate on the motion, Adejojo who posited that overloading was unsafe for both the riders and other road users, requesting that the State Government through the relevant government agencies should expedite action towards enforcing the minimum safety standards for the motor cycle riders, with passengers not exceeding two persons including the rider, on the need to enforce the use of helmet, side mirror and number plate amongst others.
Corroborating the sponsor’s view, other lawmakers including Musefiu Lamidi, Abdul Oladunjoye, Damilola Soneye and Abayomi Fasunwa posited that larger percentage of road accidents was being caused by recklessness on the part of motorcycle riders and non compliance to other road and traffic rules, adding that such unlawful act equally had a negative effect on the society as it often created traffic congestion in high density areas.
Describing the passage of the resolution as a right step with a view to enhancing road and traffic management in the State, Honourables Solomon Osho, Ademuyiwa Adeyemi and Oludaisi Elemide condemned the unlawful structural redesigning of motorcycles handle which often let off some vital organs creating dificulty in navigating roads easily.
Also, the Assembly has called on the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to immediately constitute the State Technical and Vocational Education Board for the effective management and reinvigoration of academic activities in preparation for the resumption of new academic session in State government-owned technical colleges.
Oluomo made the call while responding to the submission of a member representing Ijebu North I State Constituency, Sylvester Abiodun under Personal Explanation reiterating that the present administration would put in place, plans at ensuring that all levels of education in the State are transformed to advance human and societal development.
Earlier, Hon. Abiodun had reported that the Technical College in Ijebu North needed urgent intervention of the State government appealing for a face-lift of the infrastructure in the school as well as the provision of more teachers and teaching aid.
