Reading time: 1 Minute

Five people in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp in Monguno, Borno State, were burnt to death in an inferno which razed the settlement, yesterday.

It was also gathered that about 2,000 households were affected in the fire outbreak.

The fire started at about 11:30am, yesterday. It gutted the camp which provided shelter to hundreds of people displaced by Boko Haram, Daily Sun reports.

However, the cause of the inferno had yet to be identified as at press time.

The Monguno IDP camp houses many IDPs from several communities around the Lake Chad Basin.

The incident started at about 11:30am, at Stadium camp, and injured dozens, with thousands rendered homeless.

A rescue worker source, who was affected by the inferno said: “It was an unfortunate day for the people of Munguno, especially the IDPs occupying Stadium Camp as the fire outbreak occurred at about 11:30am.”

“The inferno lasted for about 45 minutes, killed five people. Those who died were three children, between the ages of 0-6years and two female adults.

“Many were seriously affected by the flames and dozens were injured including children.”
