The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has intensified its rescue and relief efforts in Maiduguri, successfully rescuing over 400 individuals as the region continues to grapple with crisis conditions.

This was disclosed by the agency’s North-East Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Sirajo Garba, on Sunday in Maiduguri.

Garba emphasized NEMA’s commitment to supporting those affected, stating, “We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of every individual impacted by this crisis.”

The agency’s Emergency Response Team (ERT) has been on the ground, conducting search and rescue operations, with efforts still underway to locate and assist more individuals in need.

In addition to the rescue efforts, NEMA’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) has provided critical medical outreach, treating 171 individuals in various camps across the region. “Our medical teams are on the ground, ready to provide immediate care to those who need it most,” Garba added.

Addressing Water Shortages and Medical Needs

Water shortages have been a significant challenge in some areas, particularly in Fannami Gubio Camp. In response, NEMA has deployed a water tanker to ensure a steady supply of potable water.

“We are ensuring that potable water reaches those who need it around the clock,” Garba said, adding that water purification trucks are on standby to treat and recycle floodwaters in areas facing acute shortages.

NEMA’s efforts also include collaboration with the United Nations and Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF). Together, they have established a temporary health facility in Modu Fannami Camp to address immediate medical needs.

The agency is also working to establish a permanent Camp Clinic at Fannami Gubio Camp, while continuing to deliver essential medical supplies.

Collaboration for Long-Term Relief

NEMA is working with the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency (BOSEPA) to deploy sanitation teams to underserved camps, ensuring a hygienic environment for displaced individuals.

Additionally, the agency has partnered with civil society organizations to distribute cooking pots and utensils to those lacking basic cooking materials.

Garba assured that monitoring and evaluation efforts are ongoing, and that NEMA is committed to ensuring all camps in the region receive the necessary support.

“NEMA is proactive in its approach, ensuring that all camps receive the support they require,” he said.
