A 23-year-old student, Rabiu Garba, was sentenced to 12 strokes of the cane by a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday for stealing a laptop and two cell phones. Garba, who resides in Badiko, Kaduna, pleaded guilty to two counts of trespass and theft.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, showed leniency towards Garba due to his admission of guilt, but warned him to behave and desist from crime in the future. Garba had appealed for leniency and vowed to reform his ways.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, Garba trespassed into the complainant’s room and stole a laptop valued at N220,000 and two phones valued at N342,000. The items were recovered from Garba, but the laptop was no longer functional.

The offences contravened the Penal Code of Kaduna State, 2017. The court’s sentence aims to serve as a deterrent to others and to rehabilitate Garba.”
