62-Year-Old Dies, Five Hospitalized as Cholera Outbreak Hits Ogun

The Ogun State Government has confirmed a cholera outbreak in Ijebu Igbo, Ijebu North Local Government Area, which has resulted in the death of a 62-year-old woman and the hospitalization of five others.

Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, stated that the incident occurred four days ago. A community source revealed that the deceased woman contracted cholera while caring for her infected child, who is among the hospitalized.

In a press statement on Thursday, the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association in Ogun State, Kunle Ashimi, acknowledged the cholera outbreak’s impact, affecting 30 states across the country, including Ogun, with at least 30 deaths nationwide. He expressed condolences for the victims and confirmed that the NMA is on high alert, with the government providing a contact number for reporting new cases.

Additionally, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Health, Kemi Ogunyemi, reported that the number of fatalities from the cholera outbreak in Lagos has risen to 21, following the previous update of 350 suspected cases and 15 fatalities.
