Jeavily armed bandits attacked the Umunze Police Station in the Orumba-South local government area of Anambra State on Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of two police officers.
According to Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, the attackers used improvised explosives to bomb the station.
A combined security force including police, Army, Navy, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) was deployed to the scene. They recovered five improvised explosive devices used by the attackers.
The police spokesman reported that the officers who lost their lives were engaged in a gunfight with the bandits in an attempt to repel them.
The bodies of the slain officers have been retrieved and taken to a morgue. The attack caused a fire at the police station due to the explosive devices. Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Itam visited the site for an on-the-spot assessment.
The state police command has appealed to the public for information on the attackers, assuring that any tips will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and the informant’s identity preserved.
