A tragic head-on collision on Monday involving two Mazda commercial buses, registration numbers LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH, on the Third Mainland Bridge near Ilaje, en route to Iyana-Oworonsoki, resulted in one fatality and eight injuries.
The crash, attributed to mechanical failure (brake failure) and overspeeding, led to the rear bus crashing into the one in front.
Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) swiftly intervened, facilitating the rescue of the eight passengers who sustained severe fractures.
They were transported to Gbagada General Hospital by Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS) for urgent medical care.
Police units from Bariga and Alonge Police Stations provided critical security support during the rescue, helping to restore order and expedite the restoration of normalcy.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the agency’s commitment to road safety and urged motorists to adhere to speed regulations and drive cautiously.
“The harrowing incident, which unfolded as both buses recklessly engaged in a high-speed chase from Adeniji Adele serves as a stark reminder of the catastrophic consequences of irresponsible driving practices,” he stated.
Bakare-Oki also extended condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured a swift recovery.
In a separate incident earlier on the same bridge near the UNILAG waterfront, a Honda CRV (AKD 743 HV) overturned due to excessive speeding. Fortunately, this accident resulted in no casualties.
“LASTMA personnel acted swiftly to clear the wreckage, preventing any further obstruction to the free flow of traffic on the bridge,” Bakare-Oki added.
