The Lagos State Teaching Service Commission, (TESCOM), in collaboration with Webscan Systems Limited, has commenced a six-week training of Secondary School Teachers on the use of ICT as a tool for teaching students to achieve optimal performance.

Speaking during the training at Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, tagged: ‘Promoting Smart Teaching Workforce’, the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo stated that the programme is aimed at equipping Lagos State Teachers with necessary skills in ICT in line with the present administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S agenda on Education and Technology.

She explained the importance of technology in the contemporary teaching-learning process in schools, stressing that the training is meant to educate teachers across the six districts on the integration of technology into their classroom practices.

According to her, “The teachers will be trained, specifically on how to use the internet and PowerPoint for presentation and teaching, among others which will make their classes more interesting and engaging”.

On her expectations after the training, Adefisayo said she is committed to visiting their classes for an on-the-spot assessment and expects more engagement between the teachers and their students.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary, TESCOM, Mrs. Toyin Awoseyi said that the ICT training has been designed to cater for over 2000 secondary school teachers in the State.

In her words, “As educators, we cannot be found wanting in training teachers to be ICT compliant. The training is also essential in view of the aggressive move of the State government in upscaling education; as such, we intend to carry along all teachers in Lagos in this respect”.

“You must be ready to learn, unlearn and relearn in view of the reality of the present administration’s efforts at making Lagos a SMART city”, she added.

The Chairman of Webscan Systems Ltd, Mrs. Abimbola Dada expressed the company’s readiness and excitement to collaborate with Lagos State in ensuring that the ICT digital divide in schools is eradicated.

Responding on behalf of the teachers, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Adeshina Adedoyin expressed appreciation to the Lagos State Government, through TESCOM, and Webscan Systems for the initiative, stating that the idea had been part of their agenda as a union over the years.
