The House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill proposing that the country returns back to reciting the old National Anthem.
The bill Sponsored by the House Leader, Hon. Julius Ihonvbere, was speedily passed through second reading, considered and approved at the Committee of the Whole and passed for third reading at plenary
According to the Majority leader, Nigerians have repeatedly on several occasions sung the current National Anthem without adhering to the patriotic lyrics contained in the Anthem.
He said, the old National Anthem written by Lilian Jean Williams and composed by Frances Benda, is a nostalgic reminder of Nigeria’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Hon Ahmed Jaha said there was a need to change the current ways of doing things in the country, adding that you cannot do things the same way and expect different results.
The Bill faced strong opposition from some Lawmakers who said that economic challenges in the country supersedes amendment of the National Anthem.
