In a national broadcast, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has marked the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s unbroken democracy, paying tribute to the heroes and heroines who fought for the country’s democratic journey.
He acknowledged the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists, journalists, and media establishments who played a crucial role in the struggle against military rule.
Tinubu specifically honoured the memories of Chief MKO Abiola, Kudirat Abiola, General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, Pa Alfred Rewane, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Chief Abraham Adesanya, Commodore Dan Suleiman, Chief Arthur Nwankwo, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife, Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Chief Frank Kokori, Chief Bola Ige, Chief Adekunle Ajasin, Chief Ganiyu Dawodu, Chief Ayo Fasanmi, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Chief Olabiyi Durojaiye, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, Chima Ubani, and others who sacrificed their lives for democracy.
Tinubu emphasized the importance of democracy as a way of life, beyond just holding elections, and pledged to protect citizens’ rights, freedoms, and liberties.
He also addressed the country’s economic challenges, committing to creating a stronger economy with access to economic opportunity for all.
The President announced a new national minimum wage, negotiated in good faith with organized labor, and emphasized the importance of reasoned discussion and principled compromise in democracy.
Tinubu called on Nigerians to continue moving forward, keeping the fire of democracy burning for generations to come.
He concluded by wishing the nation a Happy Democracy Day and expressing gratitude to God for blessing the Federal Republic of Nigeria and preserving its democracy.
