Operatives of the Edo State Command on Wednesday stormed Bureau de Change offices and arrested several operators in Benin City.

The operatives stormed the Bureau de Change offices located at Erie Street and Sokponba Road in the morning and arrested several operators.

One of the operators, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they were arrested without telling them their offences.

He said, more operators would have been arrested if all of them were available at the time the security operatives stormed the area.

He added that some weeks ago, officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC came to the area without arresting anybody, noting that the action of the police was probably to intimidate them out of business.

According to him, we were surprised that this morning, operatives from the Edo State Command came to our stores and started arresting some people.

“They didn’t even tell us our offences. Last time the EFCC came here, they did not arrest anybody. But we don’t know if the police are going to send us off our businesses.”

The Public Relations Officer of the command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, who confirmed the incident in a phone chat said it was in line with the federal government directives.
