Oyo Assembly Passes Bill Stipulating Jail Term For Burning Of Public Property

A bill for a law that will prohibit the destruction of public property, amenities and infrastructure was, on Thursday, passed into law at the floor of the State Assembly.

According to the Chairman of the Oyo State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Transportation, Hon. Olatunde Kehinde, any person who acts or connives with other people to destroy or damage public property commits an offence liable to conviction and a fine of #500,000.

The bill also stipulates that any person who exposes or acts to exposing any public property to theft or burglary commits an offence, and is liable to conviction of fine of two million Naira.

Hon. Olatunde Kehinde also disclosed that a person who sets fire on public property commits an imprisonment offence of five years and a fine equivalent to the value of the property damaged.

The Chairman of the State Assembly Committee on Works and Transportation, Hon. Olatunde Kehinde, while speaking to house correspondents, said people should see government property as theirs.

The state Assembly also read for the third time the State Value Added Tax Bill.
