Date:

Reading time: 3 Minutes

The Ogun State House of Assembly says it is not pleased with the presentation of the immediate past Managing Director of the Ogun State Property and Investment Corporation, Barr. Jide Odusolu during his appearance before the Committee on Public Accounts and Anti-corruption on the 25 infractions against him by the audit reports during his tenure of office, hence it directed him to re-appear before the House for further engagements on Monday, 9th November, 2020.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, who made the announcement during a plenary session at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta; enjoined him to come along with all necessary documents relating to all transactions on investments, housing projects and other fixed assets.

Also at the plenary, the Assembly again bemoaned the excesses of some security agencies in the border communities in the State, thus, it unanimously passed a resolution calling on the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to as a matter of urgency convey a security and peace summit to curb the incessant killings of innocent residents in border towns.

The passage of the resolution followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader, who represents Ado-Odo/Ota I State Constituency, Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by his counterpart from Egbado South, Bolanle Ajayi and supported by other lawmakers through a voice vote.

The resolution urged the State Governor to convey the summit on the killings in the border towns to comprise all security formations, traditional rulers, youth, market men and women as well as other stakeholders amongst others in the border areas to find a lasting solution to the extra-judicial killings being carried out by some security operatives, especially the officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service in the area, who were reported to have been physically assaulting local traders under the guise of their duty of checkmating smugglers.

The lawmakers revealed that it was worrisome to note that the customs men often seized farm produces like maize and tomatoes in the guise of arresting contraband goods.

It would be recalled that the lawmakers at the previous plenary condemned the incessant attacks and extra judicial killings of law abiding citizens by the men and officers of customs with a call on the State Government to immediately convey a stakeholders’ meeting on security, especially to address the rising cases of overzealousness on the part of the officers and men of the Nigeria customs in border areas of the State.

Earlier, a member representing Egbado North II State Constituency, Hon. Adegoke Adeyanju, intimated the Assembly on the alleged unprofessional activities of the men of customs in some parts of his constituency.

Also at the plenary, Speaker Oluomo commended the zeal and boldness of residents of the State, especially the youth in the ongoing ‘endsars protest’, with a charge to them to exercise patience with the Federal Government and the Inspector General of Police in the implementation of police reform policies, which he noted would be better positioned for effective policing of life and property of law abiding people.

Oluomo made the remarks while responding to the submission of a member representing Ijebu East State Constituency, Hon. Olusola Adams, who spoke under Personal Explanation, noting that their peaceful agitations had received the attention of the presidency, hence the disbandment of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad and subsequent formation of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT).

Also, the Speaker implored his colleagues to sensitize and mobilize their constituents to participate in the ongoing free breast cancer screening by the Office of the Wife of the State Governor in commemoration of the World Cancer month, this was in response to the commendation from a member representing Odeda State Constituency, Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, who commended the Wife of the Governor, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun for organising a free cancer test and treatment week going on simultaneously across the State.
