OGUN SPEAKER UNDERSCORES ESSENCE OF TRAINING IN LEGISLATIVE BUSINESS

As members of the Ninth Legislature of the Ogun State House of Assembly underwent a one-day capacity training, the Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo has said that a virile, diligent and purposeful legislature could only be achieved through adequate human capacity programmes for the actualization of best legislative  practices and other related activities for the overall benefit of the society.
Oluomo gave the remarks while declaring open, the in-house orientation workshop for members of the Assembly in Abeokuta, saying that only well trained legislators would be guided at ensuring diligence and vibrancy at achieving a legislative arm that could complement the efforts of the other arms of government at advancing the development of the State.
He noted that the vision of the Assembly at ensuring  judicious utilisation of public fund would be achieved with vibrant and competent legislators, who needed to be equipped for the enormous tasks ahead.
He acknowledged that resource persons had been carefully selected to deliver lectures on areas that would give an overview of the nitty gritty of legislative business in line with international standards.
The Speaker, who reiterated his resolve to ensure adequate welfare and training of the Assembly’s workforce as well as harmonious working relationships with other arms without compromising the core values of the legislature, enjoined participants to seize the opportunity provided by the training to broaden their horizon on legislative procedures with a view to ensuring improved and optimal performance in the discharge of their duties.
Oluomo, a third term member of the the Assembly, while taking his turn to deliver his paper on ” Essential Requirements for a Quintessential Legislator” enjoined his colleague-lawmakers to honour the institution they represent by avoiding acts inimical to the reputation of the legislature, pointing out that lawmakers must be people of honour and integrity, master the rules, be time conscious, be closer to the people, be sincere and always be ready to learn.
In their separate responses, participants including Honourables Yusuf Adejojo, Bolanle Ajayi, Adegoke Adeyanju and Sylvester Abiodun said the technical sessions of the training  had availed them of knowledge, skills and technicalities required as quality representatives of the people, adding that it would equip them to  be well guided in their activities as lawmakers.
They expressed appreciation to the organisers and resource persons for the training, acknowledging that  a lot were expected from them by the electorate, promising to raise the standard of performance having being acquitted with necessary rudiments in legislative proceedings.
At the training, other papers delivered included: “Structure and Functions of the Legislature,  Essential Literature for Effective Legislative Performance, Standing Order,Motions, Debates and Resolutions”.
