The Olu of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, and literary icon, Dr. Yemi Farounbi, have spoken out against the marginalization of monarchs in Nigeria’s governance structure.
They argue that the country’s progress and good governance have suffered due to the stripping of powers from traditional rulers.
The duo made their remarks on the popular monthly interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena, which was hosted by media professional, Dr. Ayo Arowojolu, and broadcast live on Sweet 107.1FM.
The program also featured a keynote speech by the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof. Saka Matemilola, who addressed the topic “Erosion of Traditional Dignity: How Nigeria’s Flawed Political and Judicial Systems Undermine Stature of Traditional Rulers.”
Oba Odidiomo emphasized that monarchs were originally responsible for governance, economy, and security but have been stripped of their constitutional powers.
He condemned the politicization of traditional institutions and the erosion of royal dignity, citing instances where monarchs are coerced or bribed into endorsing politicians.
Dr. Farounbi highlighted the historical context, noting that indirect rule in the north preserved the powers of emirs, while direct rule in the south circumvented obas.
He lamented the neglect of traditional fortification medicine and the prioritization of technology over cultural heritage.
Both leaders called for a reevaluation of the role of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s governance, seeking to restore their dignity and powers.
They emphasized the need for educated and qualified individuals to ascend to thrones, rather than those seeking power or wealth.
