A tragic accident on Thursday claimed the life of a mobile police officer in a multi-vehicle collision on the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The officer, riding a motorcycle, was reportedly crushed to death following a crash involving a truck and multiple vehicles on the busy expressway.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement released to journalists in Lagos.
He reported that the collision involved a truck, two commercial buses, and tragically led to the officer’s death.
Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu identified the deceased as an officer assigned to the MOPOL 20 Division of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
“Upon the arrival of the LASEMA Response Team at the scene, it discovered a Volvo truck with registration number FKJ 484 YA, loaded with goods and heading toward Arepo, along with a Toyota Hiace bus, registration number BWR 371 XC, and a Mercedes bus with an unknown registration number, all involved in the accident,” he said.
According to the report, “Investigations conducted by the LRT revealed that the truck crashed into a Mercedes Benz bus while in motion, swerved off the road, and fell uncontrollably onto a Toyota Hiace bus parked by the roadside.”
The mobile police officer, “attached to MOPOL 20 Division and maneuvering his way back to the office on his motorcycle, got trapped by the incident and died instantly,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu added.
He further noted that the agency’s response team recovered the officer’s remains and handed them over to police operatives from the Ojodu Division for further action.
“The body was extricated using the agency’s heavy-duty equipment, the Super Metro, bagged, and taken to Ojodu Police Station for further processing,” he stated.
The ill-fated truck, along with the Toyota Hiace bus, was also recovered and towed to the Ojodu Police Station with the assistance of the agency’s specialized equipment.
