Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero has boldly declared that attempts to silence and intimidate organized labour will ultimately fail.
Ajaero, who has been under scrutiny from security agencies, including the Police and Department of State Services (DSS), made this statement while addressing workers and union officials in Lagos.
“Recently, I was arrested and detained by the state, a clear attempt to intimidate and silence our movement,” Ajaero said. “However, we have kept faith alive, and we must all do the same.”
Ajaero confirmed that he would honour the police invitation extended to him on September 25, stating, “On August 29, we honoured the summons of the state to answer to some allegations, and on the 25th of this month, we shall honour another one.”
He emphasized the importance of integrity and unity within the labour movement, saying, “Our hands must remain unsullied, our hearts pure, so that when the enemies of our movement come, they will find nothing to use against us.”
Ajaero expressed gratitude to international organizations that supported the labour movement during its recent challenges, citing the International Labour Organization (ILO), International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), and Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) among others.
“We are especially thankful to…all the patriotic Nigerians. Your collective voices condemned the actions of the government against the NLC and its leadership, and for this, we remain profoundly grateful,” Ajaero said.
