Seventeen-year-old SS3, Oladele Ishola Deborah and Adeniran Happiness of Iloko Model College, Iloko-Ijesa have emerged winners in the secondary categories of the 2021 edition of the Spelling Bee competition for secondary schools in Osun State, organized by HRM Oba Dr. Akeem Olusayo Ogungbangbe, Ajagbusi Ekun VI, Owaloko of Iloko-Ijesa kingdom, the competition aimed at developing the skills of the students in the state, creating good reading habits and helping them improve their spelling skills, increase their vocabulary and develop correct English usage.
Pointing out that the overall goals of the competition will help students improve their spelling skills, increase their vocabulary, create good reading habits that would lead to better academic performance, the Iloko-Ijesa monarch, Oba Dr. Akeem Olusayo Ogungbangbe, said these goals are being met as evident in the performance of the students in external examinations.
Thanking the teachers for a job well done, the Orisa of Iloko-Ijesa, High Chief Ishola Ogunsanya, said the competition has helped boost the students’ confidence, create a healthy rivalry among the students and draw out their intellectual capabilities.
Words like kangaroo, geometric, porridge, paraphrase, synthetic, boycott, monumental, vacuum, hooligan, migraine, knack, metadata, farewell, kindergarten, restaurant, functionary, dodge, iota, hankering, grammarian, empirical, havoc, figurative, malacology, Continuous, Mississippi, Hippopotamus, Interdisciplinary, Antique, binoculars, abracadabra, trigonometry, javelin, botany, qualms, centipede, attendee, nomenclature, Architectural, Technology, Voluminous and Frightened eliminated some contestants.
The winner won N100,000, while the second and third runners-up, carted home N50,000 and N30,000 respectively.
