A nationwide protest against hunger and hardship in Nigeria has begun, with protesters gathering in Abuja, Kaduna, Lagos, and Rivers states.
The protests, which started peacefully, are demanding a reduction in food inflation, reversal of electricity tariff hikes, and ten other demands.
In Abuja, protesters held placards reading “Endbadgovernance”, “Enough is Enough”, “Endhunger”, and “Nigerians are ready for New Naija”. Activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju confirmed that the protests have been peaceful so far.
Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga, noted that the protesters’ demands align with the pains of everyone, emphasizing that the majority of Nigerians are hungry.
He stated that the protest symbolizes the need to address the challenges facing Nigeria.
The Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) has called for peaceful protests. However, in southeast states like Imo, Ebonyi, and Abia, no protesters were seen at designated venues.
The protests have resulted in low vehicular movement across major states in Nigeria, with a heavy security presence in place. The situation is being monitored closely, following the violent outcome of the #EndSARS protest in October 2020.
