The Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Abiodun Alamutu, has reported relative peace in the state following the decision by youths to refrain from participating in the planned protest on Tuesday.
Speaking with journalists in Abeokuta, the CP expressed satisfaction that the #FearlessOctober1 demonstration, which was expected to occur in Abeokuta and other parts of Ogun State, did not take place as anticipated.
Mr. Alamutu attributed the peaceful situation to proactive measures taken by the police in collaboration with community leaders and key stakeholders across the state. He explained that efforts were made to engage youths and prevent any form of unrest.
“A meeting was held on Sunday with critical stakeholders towards ensuring that no protest was held in the state,” the commissioner said. “Presently, there is palpable calm in the state because we consulted with critical stakeholders, urging them to speak with their wards to avoid any violent demonstrations. So far, it’s working, as there has been no sign of protest or violence in the state.”
Police Maintain Vigilance
Despite the peaceful atmosphere, the CP emphasized that law enforcement agencies remained on high alert, ready to respond to any unforeseen disturbances.
He reiterated that while peaceful protests are a constitutional right, security forces are prepared to intervene should any protest turn violent or be hijacked by disruptive elements.
“Protest is a fundamental right,” Mr. Alamutu stated, “but what we object to is when peaceful protests are hijacked by others to cause unnecessary crises. We are monitoring the situation closely and remain on standby.”
NSCDC Also Confirms Calm in Ogun
Similarly, David Ojewlabi, Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ogun State, corroborated the CP’s report, affirming that no protests occurred across the state.
He stressed that while the current situation is calm, security personnel remain vigilant.
“As far as Ogun State is concerned, I have not seen any protest anywhere,” Mr. Ojewlabi remarked. “We had a meeting with the stakeholders, and they kept to their words. Nevertheless, we have to remain alert, and that is why our men, along with those of other security agencies, are still on the ground.”
Mr. Ojewlabi concluded with a message of hope, urging citizens to remain prayerful and diligent in their efforts to uplift the nation. “If Nigerians remain prayerful and hardworking, the country will be great again,” he assured.
