The Lagos State Police Command has detained five motorcyclists for questioning following the tragic death of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) during an operation.
The police disclosed that the officer, who was on lawful duty, was fatally injured when a mob of motorcyclists attacked a patrol team responding to an accident scene.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident, explaining that the suspects allegedly ambushed the officers, who were on a rescue mission.
According to Hundeyin, the police received a distress call around 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, reporting that a motorcyclist had collided with a trailer at WEMCO Junction, along Mobile Road, PEN Cinema in the Agege area. The motorcyclist reportedly died at the scene.
Upon receiving the report, a patrol team was dispatched to the location. However, upon arrival, the officers encountered a large gathering of commercial motorcyclists.
“In the process of evacuating the truck from the scene, the patrol team came under attack by the motorcyclists, who were bent on setting the truck ablaze,” Hundeyin explained.
Tragically, during the confrontation, a 46-year-old ASP sustained a severe head injury and died on the spot. The truck driver managed to escape the scene.
“The corpses have been evacuated to Mainland General Hospital Mortuary, Yaba, for autopsy,” Hundeyin stated.
He further revealed that five suspects have been arrested, and a manhunt has been launched to apprehend the remaining individuals involved in the incident. “A manhunt for other fleeing suspects is ongoing,” he added.
