The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured a court judgment against Okechukwu Pascal, alias Cubana Chief Priest, for abusing Naira notes.

The Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Kehinde Ogundare, fined Cubana Chief Priest N10 million, exceeding the maximum fine of N50,000 for his offence.

The EFCC acted in line with Section 14(2) of its Establishment Act, which empowers the Commission to compound offences and accept a sum of money exceeding the maximum amount liable upon conviction.

Cubana Chief Priest’s counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu, SAN, had applied for the compounding of the offences under Section 14(2) of the EFCC Act.

As part of the judgment, Cubana Chief Priest is required to lead a sensitization campaign against the abuse of coins and notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

He must post at least two video clips on his social media handles every two months, promoting the sanctity of the Naira and warning against sundry offences.

The EFCC’s Special Task Force against Naira Abuse and Dollarisation remains in place, and the Commission remains committed to its lawful mandate.

The court’s ruling serves as a deterrent to Cubana Chief Priest and a reminder to Nigerians to respect the legal tender of the country.
