Popular Nigerian comedian Seyi Law has taken to social media to criticize President Tinubu over the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) recent directive to banks, imposing a 0.5% cybersecurity surcharge on all electronic transactions.
Seyi Law, a known supporter of President Tinubu, expressed his disapproval of the levy, calling it “unacceptable” and “too much punishment” for Nigerians.
The CBN’s directive, which takes effect on May 20, 2024, requires banks to charge a cybersecurity fee on all electronic transactions, ranging from N5 for transactions below N10,000 to N50,000 for transactions above N10 million.
Seyi Law argued that this levy would discourage banking transactions and encourage cash keeping, which could have negative economic implications.
In his social media post, Seyi Law urged President Tinubu to “let the poor breathe” and prioritize the implementation of a new minimum wage, which he believes should be the government’s paramount concern. He also criticized some of the president’s ministers, suggesting they need to find another job.
Seyi Law emphasized that supporting President Tinubu does not mean he has to agree with all his policies, and he encouraged other supporters to speak out when they disagree.
His post has sparked a lively debate on social media, with many Nigerians sharing their thoughts on the CBN’s directive and the government’s economic policies.
