Alleged Extral Judicial Killings By Customs: Ogun Assembly Seeks Gov Abiodun’s Intervention

Concerned by the need to protect the lives of law-abiding residents of border communities in Ogun State, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo has called on the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun to wade into the alleged incidents of extral judicial killing by officers and men of the Nigeria Customs Service through the State Security Council meeting, with a view to engaging the higher echelon of the Service to protect the residents of the affected communities in the State.

Oluomo made the call, while responding to the submission of a member representing Egbado North II State Constituency, Hon. Wahab Haruna, who under personal explanation decried the excessive activities of the officers and men of customs, which often led to killing of innocent members of his constituency over the weekend during a gun duel with suspected smugglers.

The Speaker stated that it had become imperative for the Governor to engage the higher authorities of the Service as the overzealousness of the officers and men of Customs had become unbearable and totally unacceptable to the people, having deviated totally from its core mandate of manning the border communities in the State.

Also, Oluomo directed the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to coordinate agencies under it to immediately swing into action by applying palliatives on the failing portions of roads across the State to ease human and vehicular movements in response to the submission of a member representing Obafemi/Owode State Constituency, Hon. Damilola Soneye who sought for government’s intervention to fix roads in his constituency.

In another development, the Speaker has lauded the State Command of the Nigeria Police Force for her ingenuity at apprehending some suspected criminals, who were in possession of human skull exhumed at a grave yard in Odogbolu.

Oluomo gave the commendation while responding to the presentation of a member representing Odogbolu State Constituency, Hon. Atinuke Bello, who noted that the police was able to carry out the arrest of the suspects through intelligence gathering and investigation to checkmate the criminal activity which had become rampant in the recent time in the area.

Meawhile, the Assembly also played host to the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Ogun State Branch, Yinka Elemide, who conducted free heart test for the lawmakers to commemorate this year edition of the World Heart Day.

Speaking on the need to live with the reality of covid 19 alongside the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease, a member of the Association and Consultant Cardiologist, Dr. Amina Durodola, underscored the need to empower the primary and secondary health system including the children on the lifestyle that would help contain the spread of cardiovascular disease.

She added that there was need to strengthen the system through legislation against harmful drugs, creams and other products that could cause cardiovascular disease and cancer amongst others.

The Medical Consultant further implored the people to avoid tobacco smoking, sedentary lifestyle, processed food, alcohol and steroid use amongst others.
