Abia North senator, Orji Uzor Kalu, has once again voiced his support for a single six-year term for both presidents and state governors, emphasizing that such a move would reduce the cost of governance and accelerate development.
He stated this while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today, monitored in Abuja.
Kalu criticized the current system of two four-year terms, stating it is expensive and distracts leaders from focusing on governance.
“When I was governor, I called for a single term of six years. I remember President Obasanjo accused me of being after him, and that marked the beginning of our disagreement,” he said.
The former Abia State governor further explained that most elected leaders, upon assuming office, become preoccupied with their re-election rather than fulfilling their mandate.
“Every politician is looking for re-election. The only way to solve this problem is by giving no incentive for re-election—just a single six-year term. It will improve performance, as politicians won’t need to make money for another election,” Kalu argued.
He acknowledged that his view may not align with the majority, but he firmly believes that cutting re-election would curb inefficiency in governance.
Call for Reducing Wasteful Expenditure
Kalu also called for the government to reduce unnecessary expenses, particularly foreign aid and support for regional institutions, in a bid to better manage the economy.
Defends Senate, Clarifies Emoluments
Responding to criticisms of the Senate, Kalu dismissed claims that the Godswill Akpabio-led Senate is a “rubber stamp” for the Executive. He refuted allegations of exorbitant senatorial emoluments, stating:
“I earn N14 million monthly, which covers everything—my salary, overhead, and the salaries of my staff. This sum is not enough. I have to buy fuel, maintain my constituency offices, and attend to the people’s needs.”
He also debunked the claim that senators receive official vehicles, adding that only committee vehicles are provided. “Some senators used personal funds to upgrade the vehicles given as aids for committee work, but I didn’t get one,” Kalu remarked.
Tinubu Understands Nigerians’ Hardship
Kalu expressed mixed feelings about the All Progressives Congress (APC) government’s performance. “Yes and no. My party has done well in the areas it can, but the government is not continuing from where Buhari left off, and that’s part of the challenge. They are trying to reform the economy, but it’s causing hardship,” he said.
The senator also praised Tinubu for being in touch with the plight of ordinary Nigerians. “The president is aware that Nigerians are suffering. He knows the streets well, and sometimes drives around Abuja at night to observe things for himself. He’s not the kind of president that stays locked away,” Kalu added.
No Rift with Tinubu, No Plot to Impeach Akpabio
Kalu also denied reports of a rift between himself and Tinubu and refuted claims of any move to impeach Senate President Godswill Akpabio. “There are no such plans,” he concluded.
