Nigerian Army Arrests Soldier Linked to Policeman’s Death in Lagos

The Nigerian Army (NA) has confirmed the arrest of a soldier suspected to be involved in the killing of a police officer during an altercation over an alleged traffic rule violation. The incident occurred at Volks Bus Stop, along the Ojo Iyana Iba Road in Lagos State.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 10, the Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for 81 Division, Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, revealed that the soldier was apprehended following the fatal confrontation, which took place on October 9, 2024.

The statement read: “Headquarters 81 Division Nigerian Army (NA) regrets to inform the public of an unfortunate incident that occurred on 9 October 2024 involving a soldier and a policeman following an altercation related to an alleged traffic rule violation. The incident, which is presently under investigation, escalated and resulted in the death of the policeman.”

The soldier implicated in the incident has been taken into custody by the Military Police, where he will face further investigation and possible disciplinary actions. According to the statement, the Nigerian Army deeply regrets the tragic event and remains committed to its Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement.

“The soldier suspected to have committed the offence has since been apprehended and handed over to the Military Police for investigation and further disciplinary procedures,” Ayeni stated.

In expressing remorse over the incident, the Nigerian Army emphasized its ongoing efforts to prevent such occurrences, highlighting that it consistently sensitizes its personnel on the importance of maintaining professional conduct.

“The incident is highly regrettable, given the Division’s commitment to the Nigerian Army Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement. The Nigerian Army has continuously sensitized its personnel not to engage in activities that would tarnish its image and breach the trust with other security agencies as well as the civil populace,” the statement added.

The General Officer Commanding 81 Division also extended condolences to the family of the deceased officer and the Nigeria Police Force. The army assured the public that a comprehensive investigation is underway, and justice will be served.

“The Division reassures the general public that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken to ensure that justice is served. We will continue to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure the security of lives and property in line with the constitutional mandate of the Nigerian Army.”
