Dikembe Mutombo, the eight-time NBA All-Star who retired in 2009, has left an indelible mark on the basketball world after spending 18 years in the league.

He played for several teams, including the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets.

Mutombo began treatment for a brain tumor in October 2022, highlighting the challenges he faced off the court. NBA commissioner Adam Silver reflected on Mutombo’s remarkable life, stating, “Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life. On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others.”

Standing at an impressive 7 feet 2 inches (2.18 meters), the DR Congo-born center was discovered while studying at Georgetown University, where he was selected by the Nuggets with the fourth overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft. His warm personality, combined with his trademark finger-wagging celebration, made him a beloved figure among fans.

Mutombo reached the NBA Finals twice, first with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2001 and then with the New Jersey Nets (now Brooklyn Nets) two years later. Known for his exceptional defensive skills, he led the NBA in blocked shots for five consecutive seasons and holds the record for blocks per game for three consecutive seasons.

Following his retirement, both the Atlanta Hawks and the Denver Nuggets honored Mutombo by retiring his number 55 jersey. In 2015, he was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame, solidifying his legacy as one of basketball’s all-time greats.

Beyond basketball, Mutombo was a global ambassador for the NBA and dedicated significant time to humanitarian work in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo. Silver added, “He loved what the game of basketball could do to make a positive impact on communities, especially in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo and across the continent of Africa.

He was always accessible at NBA events over the years – with his infectious smile, deep booming voice, and signature finger wag that endeared him to basketball fans of every generation.”
