A middle-aged man was fatally beaten on Monday in the Ikeja area of Lagos State, following accusations of stealing copper wire from a construction site. Eyewitnesses allege that the man was assaulted by a group of individuals after being caught with the stolen materials.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Lagos, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying that it was reported to the police at Alausa division around 4 p.m. on Sunday.

According to Hundeyin, the police were informed by a complainant—whose name was not revealed—that he had received a call from his brother notifying him of the lynching.

“The complainant explained that the victim was beaten severely with copper wire before being strangled with the same wire,” said Hundeyin.

Following the report, police officers from the Alausa division promptly visited the scene of the crime. “The investigation team recovered the body of the deceased and transferred it to the Mainland General Hospital mortuary in Yaba for preservation and autopsy,” Hundeyin stated, adding that two suspects, Samuel Lamak, 33, and Akeem Ahmed, 40, had been arrested in connection with the incident.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Ishola Olarewaju, vowed that all those involved in the alleged murder would face justice. “We will ensure that every person implicated in this tragic case is apprehended and prosecuted according to the law,” he assured.

The police have continued their investigation into the matter, while the public is urged to avoid taking the law into their own hands.
