Tragedy struck on Monday when a fatal head-on collision on the Third Mainland Bridge, near Ilaje and heading towards Iyana-Oworonshoki in Lagos, resulted in the death of an unidentified man.

The accident involved two Mazda commercial buses, with registration numbers LND 624 YE and EKY 804 YH.

Eight other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) attributed the accident to ‘irresponsible driving,’ noting that the two buses were engaged in a high-speed chase from Adeniji Adele when the collision occurred.

LASTMA Director of Public Affairs & Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, reported that the agency’s prompt response facilitated the rescue of the eight injured passengers, who suffered severe fractures.

They were swiftly transported to Gbagada General Hospital for emergency medical treatment by Lagos State Ambulance Services (LASAMBUS).

Police units from Bariga and Alonge Police Stations provided essential security support during the rescue operation, helping to restore order and normalcy at the scene.

LASTMA reiterated its commitment to road safety, urging motorists to adhere to speed regulations and drive cautiously. The agency extended its condolences to the deceased’s family and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

In a related incident earlier on Monday, a Honda CRV (AKD 743 HV) overturned on the Third Mainland Bridge near the UNILAG waterfront, also en route to Iyana-Oworonshoki.

This crash, caused by excessive speeding, fortunately resulted in no casualties. LASTMA personnel promptly cleared the wreckage, ensuring the bridge remained open to traffic.
