The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated three petrol tankers used to transport edible vegetable oil in Lagos State.

In a post on its official X handle on Wednesday, NAFDAC explained that the act poses a health risk to consumers of the edible oil due to possible contamination by petrol remnants in the tankers.

The post read, “NAFDAC officials have seized three petrol tanker trucks in Apapa for allegedly transporting crude edible vegetable oil. The oil was reportedly trans-loaded into the tankers from an edible oil depot.”

Concerned about potential health risks due to chemical contamination from the tankers’ previous use for transporting petrol, NAFDAC officials escorted the tankers to a processing facility in Sango-Ota, the agency stated.

The crude soy oil was then handed over to the South-West zonal office of NAFDAC for further regulatory action.

NAFDAC further stated that its Director-General, Moji Adeyeye, has established a committee to develop guidelines and a code of ethics to regulate the marketing and distribution of edible vegetable oils in the country.

Urging the public to report any suspicious or unwholesome practices related to food and regulated products, the agency affirmed its commitment to strict enforcement and continuous surveillance to protect public health
