The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a significant change in its admission policy.
Starting from the 2025 academic year, candidates must be at least 18 years old to be considered for admission into tertiary institutions.
This means that candidates who are 16 or 17 years old will only be eligible for admission in the 2024 academic year.
According to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, the federal government has decided to implement this policy to prevent the enrollment of underage candidates, which has been detrimental to the university and education system.
This move aims to ensure that students are emotionally and academically prepared for the rigors of tertiary education.
The new policy was announced during a briefing on the 2024 Policy Meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions/NELFUND.
JAMB’s decision is expected to have a significant impact on the admission process, and tertiary institutions are expected to comply with the new age requirement starting from the 2025 academic year.
