The police, on Tuesday, arraigned a businessman, Sanni Alhassan, 38, before the Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for receiving stolen spaghetti worth N54 million.

The prosecution counsel, John Iberedem, told the court that the defendant committed the offence between February 18 and 23 at Taiwo Sabo Aharon Road.

He said the defendant received 4,725 cartons of Honeywell Spaghetti valued at N54 million, knowing it was stolen.

“He couldn’t give any satisfactory explanation as to how he got the said goods,” said Mr Iberedem.

According to him, the offence contravenes the provisions of Section 328(9)(1)of the Criminal Law of Lagos.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The magistrate, E. Kubeinje, granted the defendant bail of N4 million, with two reliable sureties in like sum.

Kebeinje ruled that the sureties must be gainfully employed, with proof of tax payments and verification.

She adjourned the matter until July 27 for a hearing.
