At least 25 individuals lost their lives in an early Monday morning traffic accident involving a trailer at Dangwaro Flyover along Kano-Zaria Expressway in Kano State.
The incident reportedly involved a trailer loaded with 90 people, along with animals, motorcycles, and bags of maize.
Earlier, a trailer had also lost control and collided with worshippers after Juma’at prayers at Imawa town in Kura local government area last Friday, resulting in the death of 14 people.
Abdullahi Labaran, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS1.2, Kano State Sector Command, released a statement to journalists on Monday, indicating that 53 victims sustained injuries while 12 others were rescued unhurt.
Labaran explained, “At approximately 0330hrs, a fatal accident involving a trailer (IVECO) with registration number KMC 311 ZB occurred at Dangwaro Flyover along Kano-Zaria Road”
“The crash involved ninety individuals, resulting in twenty-five fatalities, fifty-three injuries, and twelve rescued unhurt individuals. Preliminary investigations suggest that over-speeding and loss of control by the trailer driver were probable causes of the crash.”
During the rescue operation, personnel from the Corps, alongside police and other responders, recovered six motorcycles, 10 mobile phones, animals (rams & goats), maize, and N4,000. All victims were swiftly transported to Murtala Specialist Hospital Kano for urgent medical care.
In response to the tragic incident, Sector Commander CC Ibrahim Abdullahi cautioned drivers against the unsafe practice of transporting animals, goods, and passengers simultaneously.
He emphasized the importance of adhering to traffic laws and regulations to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
