The Federal Government has launched a comprehensive audit of inmates in all 256 Custodial Centres across the country to tackle overcrowding, according to Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

The audit, which is being conducted empirically and scientifically, aims to identify problems and provide targeted solutions.

During a visit to the Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Kano and the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of data in addressing congestion.

He highlighted the government’s focus on reform and correction, rather than mere imprisonment, and noted ongoing renovations and improvements in security infrastructure, welfare facilities, and educational opportunities for inmates.

The minister also acknowledged historical challenges in the correctional system and expressed President Tinubu’s commitment to modernizing and improving the system for future generations.

The audit is a significant step towards decongesting Custodial Centres and ensuring a more effective and rehabilitative correctional system.
