The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has joined the ongoing nationwide strike.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) declared an indefinite nationwide strike over minimum wage and electricity tariff hike.

The strike which began on June 3, has paralysed government and commercial activities across Nigeria.

Emmanuel Osodeke, ASUU president, has directed lecturers to join the strike.

“The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, 3rd June 2024, as a result of the failure of government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff,” Osodeke stated.

“Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress.

“Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilise all members to participate in the strike action.”

Public universities have been blighted by strikes in the last decade over remuneration for lecturers and provision of infrastructure on campuses.

In 2022, ASUU embarked on what became its 16th strike in 23 years.
