Abuja, Nigeria – Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has been released from the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja after spending 27 months in detention. Kyari was granted bail by the Federal High Court in Abuja to allow him to complete his mother’s burial rites.

The Nigerian Correctional Service confirmed Kyari’s release, stating that he had perfected his bail conditions. The court will determine his bail application on May 31 in the ongoing trial over drug-related charges filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Kyari and four others are facing charges for alleged conspiracy to deal in cocaine, dealing in cocaine without lawful authority, and tampering with seized cocaine. The NDLEA alleges that Kyari and his deputy received a combined N4.2 billion in their bank accounts, with at least N1.4 billion passing through Kyari’s account while he was commander of the Intelligence Response Team.

Kyari’s release comes after his mother’s passing on May 5, 2024. He is expected to return to court on May 31 for the continuation of his trial.
