Zamfara Boat Accident Claims 41 Lives; Lawmaker Mourns Victims

A devastating boat accident in Gummi town, Gummi LGA of Zamfara State, has resulted in the deaths of 41 individuals.

The incident occurred on Saturday when a boat carrying over 50 passengers capsized shortly after departure.

While 12 passengers were successfully rescued, the remaining 41 tragically drowned. Suleiman Gummi, the Representative for Gummi-Bukkuyum Federal Constituency, expressed his profound sorrow over the incident.

In his statement, Gummi said, “I received with a rude shock the tragic news of a canoe capsizing accident in Gummi. It’s indeed a very unfortunate and sad incident, but as people of faith, we have to submit to the will of Allah”.

“We pray that Allah SWA grants eternal rest to the departed souls, the bereaved families the fortitude to bear this loss, and speedy recovery to the survivors who are traumatised by it.”

This tragic event underscores a troubling pattern of repeated boat accidents in Nigeria, raising concerns about safety on the country’s waterways.
