Ogun State House of Assembly has assured the State Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) of its commitment towards enacting relevant legislations that would aid the delivery of quality health service to residents of the State.

The Speaker, Rt, Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, gave the assurance while playing host to the executive members of the Association led by Dr. Lawal Ismail, during a courtesy visit to the State Legislature, saying the Assembly accorded the health sector a great priority, hence it vired the 2020 Appropriation Law in favour of some key sectors, especially health sector, with a view to having a robust health care delivery through the acquisition of additional modern equipment and rehabilitation of health facilities across the State.

Oluomo tasked the association to liaise with relevant stakeholders including the neighbouring States to come up with a draft bill that the Assembly could work on towards combating the practice of quackery in the sector.

He also advised the medical practitioners to engage relevant stakeholders towards achieving the domestication of Medical Residency Training Act, MRTA, 2017, with a view to accessing more human capacity development programmes in the State health system.

Earlier, Dr Lawal, while lauding the existing robust relationship between the State legislative and executive arms which he noted had resulted in innthe delivery of more democratic dividends, sought for the support of the legislative arm in achieving the association’s plans of improving the state’s health care delivery system.

In a related development, the Assembly has received members of the State Executive of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, with a commendation to them for their selfless and humanitarian services to the State and the nation at large, especially on rescue mission of accident and disaster victims.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo assured them of more legislative backing at sensitizing the public on various preventive health activities particularly on infectious and contagious diseases.

Responding, the State Chairman, Nigerian Red Cross, Mr. Joseph Obalanlege, acknowledged the laudable achievements of the 9th Assembly, assuring that the society would engage the Assembly in health related initiatives for the benefit of the people of the State.
