The Ogun State House of Assembly has called on government agencies and citizens to safeguard public assets and utilities, following recent cases of vandalism and theft.
This call to action comes after several incidents of vandalism and theft of public assets, including road furniture and iron barricades on overhead bridges, were reported in various parts of the state.
Speaker Oludaisi Elemide made the call during a plenary session at the Assembly Complex in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
He urged residents to report any cases of vandalism to security agencies and embrace an attitudinal change to protect public property.
Elemide emphasized that public utilities are critical to the state’s infrastructure and essential for the well-being of citizens.
Hon. Tella Babatunde, representing Abeokuta North, had raised the issue of vandalism on overhead bridges during the plenary session.
He reported that iron barricades on the road from Kuto-NNPC overhead Bridge in Abeokuta had been vandalized, and warned that if left unchecked, it could lead to further vandalism of government assets.
Minority Leader Hon. Lukmon Adeleye also called for the intervention of the State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure regarding the provision of median and barricades on the Ijebu-Ode/Ikoto/Epe Road.
He noted that the lack of these safety measures had led to the loss of lives in recent times.
In response, Speaker Elemide assured that the House of Assembly would extend an invitation to the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the road.
This assessment aims to identify areas that require improvement and ensure measures are in place to secure public assets and utilities.
In a related development, the Speaker congratulated the Olu of Ilaro and Paramount Ruler of Yewa Land, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, on his emergence as the new Chairman of the State Council of Obas.
Elemide wished him a prosperous tenure marked by progress, peace, and tranquility in the State.
