The management of the University of Benin has confirmed that no lives were lost in the building collapse that occurred early Saturday at Ekosodin.
Three students who were trapped in the building have been successfully rescued, according to a statement from the university’s Public Relations Officer, Benedicta Ehanire.
The rescued students are currently in stable condition and are recovering in the hospital. Initially, they were taken to the institution’s Health Centre, and two of them were later transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital for further treatment.
Tropic Reporters earlier reported that the building, which housed students, collapsed on Saturday morning following a heavy downpour that started on Friday afternoon.
The university commended the efforts of the rescue team, which included staff from the Security and Fire Service departments, the Health Centre, students, and the Police. The rescue team’s quick response was instrumental in saving the trapped students.
In the statement, the university management wished the affected students a speedy recovery and praised the rescuers for their bravery.
When contacted, Moses Yamu, the spokesperson of the Edo State Police Command, confirmed the incident. He added that rescue operations were still ongoing and that the situation would be fully assessed once the operations concluded.
