The President of The United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, has commended developing countries for fighting the spread of the Covid -19 pandemic much more than developed countries.
The president who gave the commendation while addressing journalists at a virtual press conference said situation on ground has made no sense of experts forecast of a high number of COVID-19 deaths in Africa due to the continent’s poor ranking on the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index.
He noted that COVID-19 has spread rapidly and extensively to most countries in the world, resulting in considerable mortality in Europe and the United States, as well as in numerous upper-middle-income countries in South America and Asia.
The UNGA president noted that the poorer segment in all countries are the most affected by the pandemic, adding that the poorer villages are the most hit even in countries that are better structured.
The president added that the world body is pushing for equitable distribution of the Covid-19 vaccines for all countries once they are available.
