The Lagos State Police Command has initiated a manhunt for a truck driver who allegedly struck and killed a revenue collector on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. The incident occurred on Sunday, involving a containerized truck with registration number FST 887 XD.
The truck driver, along with his conductor, reportedly fled the scene after the fatal accident, leaving behind a chaotic situation near New Garage, inbound Lagos.
Confirming the incident, the General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, stated, “The accident involved a lone containerized truck and resulted in the immediate death of the revenue collector, who was attempting to collect dues from the driver.”
Bakare-Oki explained that the victim was fatally hit while crossing the expressway. He noted that LASTMA officials promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation and ensure the smooth flow of traffic.
“Personnel from LASTMA swiftly responded to the scene, taking decisive action to manage the aftermath of the incident. The remains of the deceased were respectfully handed over to security officers from the Adigboluje Police Division, who are now working with the family to facilitate necessary formalities,” he said.
The victim’s wife, upon learning of the tragedy, rushed to the accident scene in distress. Meanwhile, the fleeing truck driver is being sought by authorities.
“The truck driver, overwhelmed by the severity of the accident, fled the scene in a bid to evade accountability,” Bakare-Oki added.
He further revealed that the abandoned truck, which initially caused traffic congestion, was removed and handed over to the police for a thorough investigation.
The LASTMA General Manager expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and called for immediate action by transport union leaders. “I extend my profound sympathies to the family of the deceased. This tragic incident underscores the need for transport unions to take decisive measures against such reckless drivers,” he said.
The Lagos State Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to apprehending the fleeing driver and bringing him to justice.
