Three people tragically lost their lives in Lagos on Monday after a truck with registration number DCF-TM-028 collided with a commercial tricycle and a Toyota Camry.
The incident occurred at Ayetoro, Ita-Opo, Epe, when the truck, descending a slope, experienced brake failure.
In a statement issued by Adebayo Taofiq, Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), he described the accident as a “harrowing incident,” resulting in the deaths of the tricycle driver and two students from Manpower Technical School, Lagos.
“The truck, due to brake failure, collided with a tricycle (Marwa AGL 442 QC) and a stationary Toyota Camry before veering into the Ayetoro Market Complex,” Taofiq said.
He also confirmed that “first responders from LASTMA, with support from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), quickly secured the area, and the deceased were respectfully transported to the Epe General Hospital mortuary.”
LASTMA worked swiftly to remove the wreckage and ease the resulting traffic congestion, ensuring safety for other road users.
In a separate incident on the same day, another crash was reported at Ijaye, heading toward Abule-Egba. This involved an LT Bus (FKJ 762 AD) and a Toyota Hiace Bus (MUS 154 YE), also attributed to brake failure. LASTMA personnel responded immediately, rescuing the driver and two passengers, who were taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.
Additional incidents were reported, including a multi-vehicle accident on Tsunami Bridge, inward Ketu.
This collision involved two Volkswagen buses (LSD 483 CT & AGL 267) and a 10-tyre DAF truck, leaving three individuals with injuries. They were promptly taken to a hospital, while officers from the Alapere Police Station provided security support during rescue efforts.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the critical importance of vehicle maintenance, especially for braking systems.
He urged motorists to carry out regular checks to prevent such tragic accidents. “Ensuring vehicle safety is crucial for preserving lives on our roads,” Bakare-Oki stated, underscoring LASTMA’s commitment to road safety.
