President Bola Tinubu has nominated Saseyi Feyijimi Ibiyemi, a seasoned lawyer, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) representing Ondo State.
If approved by the Senate, Ibiyemi will fill the position previously held by ‘Niyi Ijalaye, who passed away in August while serving as the REC in Ogun State.
The nomination was announced in a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, who highlighted Ibiyemi’s legal background and experience within INEC.
Ibiyemi, 58, from Ilaje in Ondo State, currently holds the position of INEC Administrative Secretary in Lagos State.
A graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University in 1987, Ibiyemi was called to the Bar in 1988. She later pursued further studies at Bingham University in Nasarawa State, earning a Master’s degree in Election Management.
In addition to Ibiyemi’s nomination, President Tinubu also proposed Abdulrazak Yusuf Tukur as a National Commissioner for INEC, representing the North-West zone.
Tukur, 59, brings extensive experience to the role, with educational qualifications that include a Bachelor of Arts from Bayero University Kano, a postgraduate diploma in Economics from Bradford University in England, and a Master’s of Arts from Leeds University, also in England.
Tukur’s career with INEC began in 1999 as an Assistant Chief Administrative Officer, culminating in his service as Director of Electoral Operations and Logistics until December 2023. Both nominees will appear before the Senate for confirmation.
