President Bola Tinubu has opted not to attend the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York this year. Instead, Vice President Kashim Shettima will head Nigeria’s delegation.
This decision comes as President Tinubu, who returned to Nigeria last Sunday after visits to China and the United Kingdom, seeks to concentrate on pressing domestic issues, particularly following the recent devastating flooding in the country.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, stated, “At UNGA 79, Vice President Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement to the General Assembly, attend important sideline events, and hold bilateral meetings.”
The high-level General Debate, themed “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations,” is scheduled to take place from Tuesday, September 24, to Saturday, September 28, 2024.
