A tragic incident has occurred at Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State, Nigeria, where a male student was allegedly beaten to death by his fellow students inside a hostel on campus.

The victim, whose identity has not been disclosed, was accused of stealing a mobile phone and was subjected to a brutal beating that lasted for eight hours, from 6 pm on Friday to 10 am on Saturday.

Eyewitnesses reported that the student was beaten with sticks and had his hair forcefully shaved by his assailants.

Videos shared with our correspondent show the victim being beaten by a group of students, with one of them encouraging the others to hit him “harder, harder.”

According to a source in the school, “They said they caught him with a stolen phone. They started beating him from 6 pm yesterday (Friday) until he died at about 10 am today (Saturday). They also shaved the hair of the guy before beating him.”

The university management has confirmed the incident and expelled the students suspected of being involved in the crime, handing them over to the police for prosecution.

In a statement, the university spokesperson, Femi Atoyebi, said, “Contrary to what is trending, the university affirms that there is no cultism in the institution, just as the university has zero tolerance for any sort of anti-societal vices and misconduct. It is important to stress that the expelled students do not belong to any cult group.”
