Mr. Timothy Erigbemi Shorunke, FCTI has been invested as the 8th Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) Abeokuta and District Society.
Shorunke received the baton of leadership from Mrs Oluwaseun Olajube, who is the immediate past Chairman, at an investiture and inauguration ceremony held at H3 Event Center, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Prior his emergence as Chairman in an election held at the 19th Annual General Meeting of the district in April 2021, Shorunke had served as Vice Chairman in the immediate past cabinet.
Other members of the Shorunke led executive council inaugurated are Mrs Oluyomi Dawodu, Vice Chairman; Mr Adewale Adetona, Deputy Vice Chairman; Mr Olutoki Samson, General Secretary; Mr Oyero Olalekan, Assistant General Secretary; Barr. Olabisi Omonayajo – Ilesanmi, Legal Adviser; Mr. Obafemi Nojeem, Honourary Treasurer; Mr. Azeez O. Akanbi, Financial Secretary; and Mr. Olayemi Kamar’deen as Social and Publicity Secretary.
Shorunke in his acceptance speech promised to consolidate on the efforts and achievements of past leaders to move the institute to height.
Shorunke reiterates continuous cooperation with all stakeholders in the Tax system including but not limited to Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), State Internal Revenue Service, the academias and others.
While assuring of getting more members involved in the activities of the district, Shorunke called for collective effort, invaluable support, cooperation and unwavering of all members for the administration to achieve its set goals.
Delivering the investiture lecture titled, “Nigeria’s Fiscal Federalism and the Quest for Non-oil Revenue, Mr. Yomi Olugbenro, Partner and West Africa Tax Leader, Deloitte pointed to the instrumentality of taxation and revenue generation as a tool for poverty reduction and sustainable development.
Expatiating his stance, he noted that governments at level should adopt new progressive method towards revenue generation beyond oil revenue and increased drive for tax digitalization to ensure full compliance among Nigeria’s tax payers.
In his keynote address, the Chairman of the occasion and President of Ogun State Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (OGUNCCIMA) Alhaji Wasiu Olaleye, charged the new Chairman on accountability, objectivity and innovations as he stirred the affairs of the institute’s district for another two years.
In his remark, the president and chairman of council, CITN, Mr. Adesina Isaac Adebayo ably represented by Vice Chairman, Barr. Samuel Agbeluyi who sought the cooperation of members for a successful tenure of the new chair, said that the institute is committed to ensure government and other stakeholders in the tax system recognize the role of tax professionals in effective revenue mobilization in all tiers of government.
He however called for the establishment of Tax Club in secondary schools to further promote all Tax related activities and engagements of the Institute.
The Past President of NACCIMA, Iyalode Alaba Lawson in her remarks extolled Shorunke’s attributes and expressed confidence on his ability to sustain and improve on the legacy of the institute.
The event also witnessed the inauguration of Society of Women In Taxation (SWIT), Ogun State Chapter, Mrs. Oluyomi Dawodu, Coordinator and other executive committee members for 2021 – 2023.
