Senator Monday Okpebholo has officially assumed office as the Governor of Edo State following his victory in the September 21 governorship election.
Okpebholo, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), triumphed over his main opponents, Barrister Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Barrister Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.
His inauguration ceremony took place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin amidst a large gathering of supporters.
Hon. Dennis Idahosa was also sworn in as the Deputy Governor, taking the oath of office in a ceremony administered by the Edo State Chief Judge, Justice Daniel Okongbowa.
Vice-President Kashim Shettima led the Federal Government’s delegation to witness the event, underscoring the significance of this transition for the APC administration.
Joining Shettima were several APC governors, including Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Hope Uzodinma of Imo, and Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto, as well as APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and former APC Chairman Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
Okpebholo took the oath of office at 1:00 p.m., accompanied by his two daughters, before a crowd that included various dignitaries and enthusiastic supporters.
Reflecting on the moment, he pledged to “dedicate this administration to the progress and welfare of Edo State’s citizens,” adding, “we are here to serve and bring transformation.”
Deputy Governor Idahosa, standing beside his wife during his oath, promised to “work hand in hand with the governor to realize the goals of this administration.”
Following the oaths, Governor Okpebholo inspected the guard of honor, while officers of the Nigeria Police conducted a formal parade to conclude the ceremony.
