The Senate has summoned the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, in response to the alarming state of the Old Oyo-Ogbomoso road in Oyo State.
This decision followed a motion of urgent public importance raised by Senator AbdulFatai Buhari (APC Oyo North) during the commencement of plenary.
Senator Buhari expressed grave concerns regarding the hardships faced by travelers using this critical route, which links the southern and northern regions of the country. “For over ten years, despite the federal government initiating major repairs on the road, it remains in a deplorable state, resulting in regular accidents and daily gridlock caused by articulated vehicles,” he stated.
Despite significant repairs conducted by the federal government more than a decade ago, the road has continued to deteriorate, leading to frequent accidents and extensive traffic congestion, particularly from heavy trucks.
Senators participating in the debate echoed Buhari’s concerns, urging the federal government to take immediate action to address the road’s condition, emphasizing its economic significance as a vital link between the South and North.
In his response, President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, instructed the Minister of Works to appear before the Senate Committee on Works to explain the delays and abandonment of the road project. He also mandated the committee to report back to the plenary within three weeks following their engagement with the Minister.
